Large 19th Century French Aubusson Tapestry Cartoon Painting

A fantastically rare and large 19th century French Aubusson tapestry cartoon gouache painting. These paintings were used by a weaver as a model and are called ‘carton de tapisserie’.

It was placed by the weaver under the chain of their loom, who would then follow the contours of the drawing and fill in the colours using bobbins of wool. These cartoons were often thrown away once the tapestry was finished so are rare to find. This one has sadly lost paint, but nevertheless remains a beautiful piece.
